"Get a mechanical keyboard" is common advice, but it skips the real question: which type actually suits you? Both mechanical and membrane boards have genuine strengths. Here's how they differ and when each one makes sense.
How they work
- Membrane keyboards register a keypress when a rubber dome collapses onto a circuit board. They're quiet, cheap to produce, and usually lighter.
- Mechanical keyboards use an individual spring-loaded switch under every key. Each press is crisper and more consistent, and the switches are rated for tens of millions of presses.
Switch feel (mechanical only)
The big draw of mechanical boards is choosing how your keys feel:

This is where mechanical boards pull ahead. Membrane domes soften and get mushy as they wear, while mechanical switches stay consistent for years. If you type or play heavily, a mechanical board will simply last longer and feel the same on day 1,000 as it did on day one.

Membrane keyboards win on upfront cost and are perfectly fine for casual use. Mechanical keyboards cost more but are often a better long-term value thanks to their lifespan — and the enthusiast ecosystem (hot-swap switches, custom keycaps) lets you upgrade instead of replace.
