The difference between a setup you can game on for hours and one that leaves you sore by lunch usually isn't the gear — it's the geometry. Desk height, monitor distance, and how your body is supported matter more than any spec. Here's how to get the ergonomics right.
Desk and chair height
Start with your elbows. When you're seated with your forearms on the desk, your elbows should bend at roughly 90° and your wrists should rest neutral — not bent up or down. Your feet should sit flat on the floor (or a footrest) with knees around 90° too. Set chair height first, then match the desk; if the desk is fixed, adjust the chair and add a footrest as needed.
Monitor height and distance
The top of your screen should sit at or just below eye level so your gaze drops slightly into the display — that keeps your neck neutral instead of craned. Distance-wise, about an arm's length away is the sweet spot for most monitors; larger panels want a little more room, which ties into our monitor size and resolution guide. A monitor arm or a stand riser makes dialing this in easy.
Posture that lasts
- Sit back into the chair so it supports your lower back — don't perch on the edge.
- Keep shoulders relaxed, not hunched toward the keyboard.
- Let your wrists float or rest lightly; avoid planting them at a sharp angle.
- Keep the mouse and keyboard close enough that you're not reaching forward.
Movement beats any single position
Even perfect ergonomics get uncomfortable if you hold them for six hours straight. The best "posture" is a changing one: stand up, stretch, and look away from the screen periodically. A quick break every hour does more for comfort than any gadget.
The chair is half the equation
A desk set to the right height only helps if your chair supports you properly — the two work together. Our guide on how to choose a gaming chair covers adjustability, lumbar support, and fit.
Tidy space, clearer head
Cables tangled around your legs and a cramped surface chip away at comfort too. Once your ergonomics are set, our cable management guide helps you clear the clutter.
